 29 Jan 2018

You are going to apply for that job at Nationwide Building Society, you think that you have everything set and you are ready to hit apply and send your CV to us.

But wait! We have composed a mini checklist to make sure you are fully prepared before you even apply for the role at Nationwide Building Society.  So, let us begin.

Update your CV

Now this one sounds simple and you would think we would not need to mention it, but did you know that on average recruiters from all industries will spend a mere 6 seconds before establishing if a CVs worth progressing a candidate through to a specific job.

Top things to look out for:

  • Check spelling
  • Check grammar
  • Put your expertise and skills at the top
  • Do not make it too long
  • Tailor your CV to each individual job
  • 2 A4 Pages maximum

Please feel free to send your CV over to our Nationwide Building Society team here at C&D and one of them will be able to review it for you and give you some advice if we need to.

Know what a S.T.A.R response is

Situation – Give context and background to the situation

Task – What was your task within this role

Action – Use ‘I’ rather than we and say how you assessed the situation and what you did after that

Result – The result should always be positive and ideally a quantifiable answer (increased sales by £23K)

Competency questions make up a large part of most job interviews, including Nationwide Building Society. The questions will usually start with something like “tell me about a time when you” this will be followed by a competency that would have been listed in the Job Description / Job Advert.

Use experience from previous employers to display what you did to meet that competency. Nationwide Building Society’s interviews consist of about 90% competency-based questions which will require you to give the answer as a S.T.A.R response.

Ensure your Personal Brand is professional

It seems to us here at C&D that ‘Personal Brand’ is going to be a hot topic this year.  This means many people are going to be focusing on building their personal brand and it makes sense in the digital age that we live in to have an established and effective personal brand.

Nationwide Building Society along with most other businesses and recruitment agencies alike invest both time and money to vet candidates using their online profiles, social media channels and other digital footprints that may be about you. This process is to gain an understanding as to if a candidate is a suitable fit for the company and if they will fit within the company ethos.

You can read this article here that gives you 5 ways to improve your social media presence when looking for a new job.

Dress for the job you want, not for the one that you have

We are sure that you have heard this many times before.

Dressing for the job you want (and not the job you have) is not as simple as putting on some new clothes, it is the practice of internalising your dreams and goals. There is a psychological reason behind this

“Set your mind on a definite goal and observe how quickly the world stands aside to let you pass.”

  • Napoleon Hill, Think and Grow Rich.

That means dressing, talking, behaving and constantly learning to improve yourself. Think about it as a complete package and that is what you are trying to sell to the employer whoever they may be.

The way you present yourself at all times is very important.

Have questions to ask

Questions are so important when you are interviewing for a job as it will allow you to get a full understanding of the company, ethos and actual job you are recruiting for.

It will also leave a positive and memorable impression on the interviewers, it also shows you have an interest in the opportunity at hand. It helps you gain valuable information you may not know about before. Above all, it turns the interview into a conversation rather than one-way communication.

These are some of our tips if you would like to apply for a role at Nationwide Building Society.  Please feel free to email out Nationwide Building Society team here at C&D if you would like any more advice.
