Supplier Quality Assurance Engineer

SQA Engineer     

Salary £35,000 to £40,000

Location: Melksham, Wiltshire

Hours: standard office working hours: Monday to Thursday 9-5pm Friday 9-12pm  

Extensive worldwide travel will be required so a full UK/European driving licence and passport is required.

Position: Welding and fabricated product SQA engineer

Purpose of position:

Responsible for managing a portfolio of suppliers across various commodities within a general SQA function and to have responsibility as required for inspection and sign off of welded assemblies and components both in-house and within the supply chain.


Higher National Degree / Degree.

Engineering field of study.

Highly desirable qualifications:

ISO 9001 lead auditor.

 Welding Technologist (EWT/IWT according to Doc. IAB-003-2000/EWF 410)

Visual inspector CSWIP 3.1 or equivalent

Professional experience and/or qualifications:

Practical Engineering background with previous experience as Quality Engineer or Supplier Quality Assurance engineer with a broad ranging manufacturing processes and extensive quality systems knowledge.

Minimum 3 years working experience as a SQA engineer for welded / fabricated product and quality process a distinct within an OEM or 1st Tier supplier or Welding Supervisor/Engineer or Welding Technologist with a similar level of exposure.

Experience in quality plans, WPSs, WPQRs and Pre-production welding tests.

Ability to read engineering drawings and interpret appropriate welding specifications is mandatory. 

Knowledge and understanding of ISO 5817 & EN15085 (Welding of railway vehicles and components) a distinct advantage.

Knowledge and understanding of non-destructive testing requirements according to BS EN ISO 9712.

Knowledge and understanding of Visual testing of fusion-welded joints according to EN ISO 17637 with the ability to evaluate Macro-& microscopic testings acc. to  EN 1321 (ISO 17639) and EN 571-1 (ISO 3452-1)  of weld seam structures & their imperfections

Experience for Weld Quality Levels for Steel acc. to EN ISO 5817 & Aluminium EN ISO 10042 

Basic experience in dealing with test methods as follow:

Penetrant testing of welds EN ISO 23277 / Radiography EN 12517-1  (ISO 10675) / Ultrasonic EN ISO 11666, EN ISO 23279 / Magnetic Particle Test  EN ISO 23278 / 

Knowledge and understanding of ISO9001:2015

Knowledge and understanding of the establishment, implementation, monitoring and necessary control of Welding Technical Quality Management Systems acc. to EN ISO 3834 : Quality requirements for fusion welding of metallic materials - Part 2: Comprehensive quality requirements 

Knowledge and understanding of ISO 14731 (welding tasks and responsibilities).

Experience of using APQP methodology advantageous.

Additional skills and requirements (IT, languages, extensive travel, etc):

Computer literate. Advanced Microsoft Excel Skills. Experience using SAP highly advantageous.

Indicative Main Responsibilities/ Duties  (5-9 key outputs):

  • Support the business in achieving the required quality to ensure that product is delivered On-time, to the correct quality and cost. Manage the supply chain quality level of relevant welded & fabricated products within the business.
  • Be a key element in shaping and implementing new processes to manage the Supplier Quality function.
  • To ensure supplier adherence to the company’s local Supplier quality manual & group quality assurance agreements and technical delivery conditions
  • To prepare, perform and document Supplier System Audits in compliance with internal defined process & to manage associated supplier audit corrective action plans.
  • To perform or support the company IWE during welding supplier certification and process assessment audits.
  • To obtain objective evidence in support of the above activity i.e. C of C's, test results, inspection reports, QA documentation. Validate and Verify manufacturing instructions. Review and ensure that all requirements are / have been cascaded into the supplier's sub-contractors and visit such suppliers to validate.
  • Corrective Action Report (CAR) / Preventive Action Report (PAR) follow up and review i.e. verify and validate the CAR / Preventive actions within the supply base if applicable.
  • To support the business in preventing the use of un-authorised changes. Review of quality plans and that they are correctly implemented, up-dated as required. Review lessons learnt follow up and monitor continuous improvement activities.
  • Support strategic supplier quality improvement/development plans.
  • Support the New Product Development and Introduction process to integrate suppliers intrinsically with the APQP (Advanced Product Quality Planning) activities
  • Facilitate or support First Article Inspections (FAI) on the portfolio of products/commodities managed
