Cost Engineer, Melksham, Wiltshire 



Salary: £45,000 - £50,000 

Location: Melksham, Wiltshire 

Hours: Monday -Thursday 8:30 - 16:30 Friday 8:30-12pm 


Purpose of position:

Support for engineering and purchasing by providing cost transparency


Essential:  Educated to Degree level or a relevant NVQ in Engineering 

Preferred:    Master degree of Engineering or equivalent.

Professional experience and/or qualifications:

Essential:  Minimum  3 years of experience in the area of cost calculation or reduction

Preferred: Experience working as industrial or process engineer.

Additional skills and requirements (IT, languages, extensive travel, etc):

Experience of SAP or similar

MS Office Experience

Experience in Creo or similar

Ability to read engineering drawings

Flexibility to travel

Contribution in cost based negotiations

Support Purchasing & Engineering in getting understanding of purchased item's cost structures.

Compilation of a know-how database

Suggested saving potential

Moderation of cost down workshops

Responsibility for personnel:


Indicative Main Responsibilities/Duties:

  • Create cost transparency for purchased parts
  • Engineering and Technical know-how for specific products and suppliers (cost structure, technology (product and manufacturing))
  • Optimize costs by choosing the best technology
  • Teach Engineers in cost avoidance in the design
  • Support the purchasing team in negotiation with technical expertise
  • Continuous improvement of calculation methods
  • Train new team members in the methodology  of cost calculation and production processes
  • Lead smaller cost improvement projects
  • Benchmarking of production processes
  • Target costing for selected product portfolio
  • Participation in make-or-buy projects
  • Ensure reference / target prices are available for purchasing in an adequate tool
  • Member of cross-functional teams with R&D, quality and testing.

Key Competencies:

  • Analytical Skills: Attention to detail, Produce reports in Excel and SAP, PolariX or other calculation tool.
  • SAP: Good Understanding and working knowledge of SAP
  • Project ownership, planning and management of projects
  • Proactively engage in continuous improvement
  • Good people skills to work within a team and able to work autonomously.
  • Highly motivated & drive for success
