Onboarding for Success

Employee on-boarding process

Companies that value and develop their talent pool avoid the need to compete on the employment market for skilled and experienced candidates.  Candidates that are valued and appreciated from the moment they begin with a company will reciprocate as outstanding brand ambassadors and long-serving employees.

Onboarding is a core activity in bringing on new clients and is also essential when hiring.  The following guidelines are a great place to start developing your company’s onboarding process.

When to Begin
The sooner the better, preferably even before their start date.  Create a sense of trust and inclusion by sending your new appointments pre-start date mail including useful reading material about their department and the company.  This allows your newest recruits to get a sense of your company tone and to begin to grow into the culture.

Executive Welcomes
A welcome by upper line management and an introduction to executives sends a powerful message to new starters i.e. they matter.  Seeing and being introduced to the leadership also give new staff an added sense of credibility before they begin their role in earnest.

Keep it Engaging
Make the onboarding process engaging and interactive.   New starters will gain and retain far more detail and a better sense of the company tone of voice, culture,
products and services.  Schedule their induction agenda to run in a logical and progressive pattern so new starters can assimilate the content without distraction.

Cultivate Company Culture
The onboarding process is the ideal opportunity to generously share the company culture with your new starters who will be very receptive to the message.
The company vision, values and mission could be delivered by team leaders or fast track trainees.  Video testimonials from clients, suppliers and partners are excellent for adding depth and credibility to your message.   Bring in your Marketing and PR team to deliver their message along with the marketing collateral they would usually dispense at trade events.

Onboarding for success is a robust and productive method of protecting your recruitment efforts and investment.  In addition, it is an effective means of setting up your new recruits to succeed by enjoying greater job satisfaction and improving performance.  You will also be developing your future brand ambassadors, invaluable in the market.
